ISO 45001:2018 · Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems

ISO 45001:2018 explained — Occupational Health & Safety Management

ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Management Systems. It replaced OHSAS 18001 in 2021 and is now the global benchmark for organisations that want to systematically reduce work-related injury and ill health.

What ISO 45001 covers

The standard adds OH&S-specific requirements on top of the Annex SL High-Level Structure:

Who needs ISO 45001?

Any organisation with workers — own staff, contractors or temporary labour — that wants to demonstrate a managed approach to safety. Especially relevant for construction, manufacturing, energy, healthcare, logistics and field services.

ISO 45001 — frequently asked questions

What is ISO 45001 in simple terms?

ISO 45001 is a structured way for an organisation to identify safety hazards, assess risk, set safety objectives, consult its workers, prevent incidents, and continually improve. Certification provides assurance to customers, regulators and insurers.

How does ISO 45001 differ from OHSAS 18001?

ISO 45001 sits on the High-Level Structure (so it integrates with ISO 9001 / 14001), explicitly requires worker consultation and participation, has stronger contractor and procurement controls, and emphasises leadership commitment. OHSAS 18001 was withdrawn in March 2021.

Is ISO 45001 a legal requirement?

No, but in many sectors (construction, oil & gas, public-sector tenders) it is a contractual prerequisite. Some jurisdictions also reduce employer liability premiums for ISO 45001-certified firms.

How does ISO 45001 relate to NEBOSH and IOSH?

ISO 45001 is the management-system standard for the organisation. NEBOSH and IOSH are personal certifications for individuals working in safety. The two complement each other: a NEBOSH-certified safety officer typically implements an ISO 45001 system.

What does "worker consultation and participation" mean in practice?

You must give workers (including non-managerial) genuine input into hazard identification, risk assessment, incident investigation and the development of the OH&S policy. The means are flexible — toolbox talks, safety committees, anonymous suggestion channels — but the substance must be real.
